Slow down, look, & listen: A perspective on the natural history of Sonoma County, and why nature matters.
|
Tauzer Lecturer: Shawn Brumbaugh
|
California, and Sonoma County in particular, is renowned for its natural beauty and rich biodiversity. From a biologist’s perspective, we live in a truly special place; in less than a one-hour drive one can be at the coast exploring tide pools, to being immersed in the quiet solitude of the redwood forest, to wandering the grassy hills and valleys marked by iconic oaks. Each of these places has its own natural history story. The last few years have been difficult for this region, which is why it is so important that we slow down to appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us. Taking time to notice patterns in nature – developing an art of seeing – can inspire wonder and strengthen a sense of place. |

Much of the mathematics that is used today can be traced to the very ancient discoveries of the peoples of the Indian Subcontinent including the number system that we use. The use of a zero as a placeholder in our modern number system can also be traced to India. The speaker will also talk about a wonderful conference in Phnom Penh, Cambodia that was about an early zero found in Cambodia by the late author Amir Aczel. This talk will not assume a high level of mathematics understanding.

The process of applying can be easy for some, but very complex for others. Student Financial Services seeks to make the process as smooth as possible for all SRJC students, but in cases where we require tax documents or high school diplomas, or even appeals for lost eligibility, it can feel like there are hurdles to bound. 87% of SRJC students receive some type of financial aid and this number is rising, due to the exciting opportunities between SRJC for FREE, the DREAM Application and generous SRJC Foundation Scholarships. Title: Leveraging Lists
Presenters: Todd Straus - Description: Every class features content organized and presented in the form of lists. How do you deal with these beasts? Do you mostly ignore them? Do you ask your students to memorize them? Or do you bring them to life? I LOVE lists and have developed ways to integrate them into class work in order to leverage their significant, yet rarely exploited, potential. If you find yourself at a loss as to how to make lists sing, then this session may benefit your teaching. Please bring three copies of one typical list of course content (for example: a list of terms and definitions or a chart, or an illustration with elements identified, etc.) from one of your courses to this PDA session.

Title: What Is Quality Education?
Presenters: Jurgen Kremer, Eric Thompson and Julie Thompson - Description: The purpose of this seminar is to catalyze faculty conversations about the term 'quality education', a term frequently used in discussions in shared governance and elsewhere. The understanding of what 'quality education' might be underlies many current discussions that will result in important strategic decisions. However, we are lacking clear descriptions that explicate and assert what this might mean for our college. Clarity is particularly important in the face of pressures to define quality education primarily in terms of quantitative measures. The humanist tradition, the behaviorist tradition, critical theory traditions, indigenous traditions, and other traditions all define quality education differently. We will facilitate a multidimensional discussion that explores the complexity of quality education. After an overview of central issues we will kick off our discussion with descriptions that we hope will provoke a lively debate during which we imagine, posit, critique, and challenge different notions and purposes of interpretations of 'quality education'.

Title: Navigating changes and uncertainty that come with aging: a 3-step toolkit to become your best and thrive
Presenters: Pat Sanborn, MA, MS - Description: You don't see it coming and suddenly there it is: an uncertainty about your future, a body that's changing, and possibly feeling like you're starting to lose a little of who you've been your whole life. Or maybe it's a major health issue, job loss, or the loss of your parents/spouse/friends/family members, or the narrowing down of options in your future as you face changes in health and finances. Soon 20% of US the population will be over 65 years of age; aging is different for each person. Society is not kind to agers, and everybody is aging! In this 90-minute session, we look at what supports and prevents healthy aging, what we can/cannot do about it and how to make better choices and thrive as we age. I have worked and learned from agers, including centenarians; their experience guides this workshop. They say, 'If I only knew then what I know now, I would have lived life differently', 'I shoulda planned better'. How to handle things when mom goes on hospice? Dad comes out of hospital? Your sister gets cancer? Your wife gets dementia? Join this workshop where you'll learn the three steps to FEARLESS AGING, an approach to growing older that puts you in control of your aging options so you can thrive and live a long, vibrant life. Get these questions answered: Can I really create the life I want in this next stage of my life? What will aging mean for me? How can I avoid becoming a burden to others? Will I age the way my parents did? We will use a workbook with experience-based worksheets to guide small group discussions. You will learn new tools to thrive and better manage future risks in aging.

These elements can further be explored by ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, and other markers that can help us direct our energy and resources to making SRJC a stronger institution for all. Title: Guided Pathways and the Decolonial Imaginary
Presenters: Jurgen Kremer - Description: The documentary Schooling the World raises profound questions about the basic assumptions of Western Education. These questions apply to the countries to which Western education is exported as much as to the practice of education in the exporting centers, such as the California community college system. The decolonial imaginary provides a contrast to the imaginary of modernity and can be used as a foil to respond to neoliberal visions of education as espoused in the Chancellor's Vision. The first part of this seminar will consist of a showing and discussion of excerpts of Schooling the World. The second part will outline the decolonial imaginary and explore fundamental mission, goals, and value questions of our current crisis in education from an indigenous and decolonial perspective.

Title: Building a Culture of Health in Nursing: Best Practices for Student Success in Standardized Testing
Presenters: Dr. Anna Valdez, Diane Donnelly, Katherine Magee - Description: This workshop will be an opportunity for faculty to dialogue about pedagogical strategies and informed direction of test item development to align with recently updated standardized (NCLEX) test plan. It is vital for faculty to adapt current teaching practices to be current with the new standardized testing methods. Nursing students must apply learned knowledge, skills and critical thinking necessary to practice as a clinical nurse in the standardized testing environment to achieve licensure. Faculty must prepare for this testing update to promote student success by customizing and improving curriculum to meet new testing expectations. Changes to the standardized test include increased and improved emphasis on culture and spirituality and more robust evolving real-life patient care scenarios with enhanced critical reasoning application. These changes are critical to validate entry-level nursing competency and license nurses who are well versed in a culture of health, assuring best practice to sustain safe quality care within our communities. The Life Cycle of the NCLEX Test Plan and Updates to the 2019 NCLEX-RN Test Plan provided by the NCSBN - National Council of State Boards of Nursing, will be used as a platform for faculty to collaborate on themes for curriculum and testing format modifications. Through conversation and shared ideas about these changes, faculty can support best practices for our students to prepare and succeed in passing the NCLEX test upon graduation.
