09:A 3CSN Equity 101 7 week online course

Presenter(s): 3CSN

California Community Colleges are experiencing a critical moment of transformation through demands to integrate programs, create Guided Pathways, and revise ESL, English, and Math pathways via AB 705, and equity is foundational to all of these initiatives. What we need is a space to inquire into teaching and learning perspectives for equity and opportunities to mindfully and intentionally reflect on our core beliefs and practices within education. 3CSN is launching Equity 101, a 7-week online course, intended to create a space for educators to learn some of the many teaching and learning perspectives for equity, and to reflect, collaborate, and deepen our practice as educators. Equity is praxis (reflection in action upon the world to transform it); equity is the result of on-going inquiry into our theories and practices, and at its core is the goal of social justice. This is not a how-to-equity class; rather, it’s a place for educators to inquire into effectively facilitating learning and success for diverse students, engage in praxis, and build a community of learners with the intent of achieving equity for our students. Our fall Equity 101 class begins September 16. Please join us!

03:A Arts & Lectures- Mathematics of the Maya Calendar

Presenter(s): Dan Munton

One Maya Calendar generated much interest prior to the end of the 13th Bak'tun in December 2012. Now that we have finished "partying like its 12.19.19.17.19", we can examine more closely the mathematics of the intricate calendars of the Maya and the misinterpretations of Maya culture that led to the apocalyptic hysteria. Daniel Munton, an SRJC Mathematic faculty, discusses the Tzolk'in, Haab, Long Count, and Lunar calendars and how they interconnect from mathematical, historical, and cultural perspectives and examines the Maya ideas regarding cycles and apocalypse.

Presenter(s): Linda Lau

Domestic workers have played an important part in many cultures throughout history, yet their stories are not often told. Female film directors Anna Muylaert and Ann Hui break this tradition by bringing domestic helpers to the center of their films, The Second Mother and A Simple Life. Set in Rio and Hong Kong, the films portray the everyday life of live-in maids, who spend their days cooking, cleaning, and rearing children for their employers. Join us as we explore the significance of housework, race, and women in society today.

26:A Indigenous Peoples' Day

Presenter(s): Varies

In 2015, the Student Government Assembly (SGA) collaborated with the SRJC Superintendent/President, MEChA de SRJC, and SRJC Inter-Tribal Council to write a resolution that recognized the importance of indigenous roots. They resolved to celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day on the 2nd Monday of October with a Big Time (Community) event in order to reflect upon the ongoing struggles of indigenous people on this land and to celebrate the thriving culture and value that indigenous nations add to our county. This tradition continues and for 2019 it will be on Monday, October 14th from 10am - 2pm on Analy Lawn at SRJC Santa Rosa. Activities will include native vendors who will have items available for purchase, food vendors who will have items for sale including fry bread, dancing by the Pomo tribal members, and music. Dr. Brenda Flyswithhawks plans to bless the event at 10:30am with an opening ceremony and will introduce local, native leaders throughout the area. Join us as we celebrate our indigenous roots in Sonoma County!

In this face to face workshop designed for all disciplines, we'll take learning units that we already like - good readings, solid assignments - and RA-ify them to bring students to even deeper levels of reading, writing, and critical thinking. Using Reading Apprenticeship consultation protocols, we'll work together in small groups to celebrate our current successes and determine where and how we can deepen learning. Along with the Reading Apprenticeship routines and framework, we will draw on each other’s knowledge and experience to compound the effectiveness of already good work. Please bring an outline of your unit/module to share and work from, including text titles and culminating assignment (if applicable).

Presenter(s): Varies

With the implementation of AB705 and increase of ELLs in cal states, more professors are seeing a rise in the number of English language learners, known as multilingual learners in increasingly rigorous courses. This can be intimidating and create concerns about success rates and how to support these learners. This four session series will create a path for professors to support these learners strategically using metacognitive conversation as a tool to know these students and increase the quality of course engagement.

06:A Arts & Lectures: Making Walden: How Thoreau Went About It

Presenter(s): Professor Mitchell Breitweiser of UC Berkeley

Walden is the well-known and much-loved story of Henry David Thoreau’s “life in the woods,” as he put it in the subtitle. The story of Walden itself, the book, is much less familiar, but equally intriguing, at least for me, because it shows the growth in Thoreau’s understanding of what had happened to him while he lived alone by the side of the pond during the years after he had returned to town. He knew from the first that what he considered to have been a great experiment had changed him for the better, reconciling him with his own life by providing a sense of direction, and he set pen to paper to encourage others to attempt to do something similar. But writing the book ended up taking eight years, running through seven drafts, as he attempted to keep pace with his deepening comprehension of what had happened within him during those two years of solitary self-exploration. I will try to tell the story of the book, and to persuade you that knowing that story will enhance your appreciation of the story that is told in the book.

37:A 3CSN's Event: Supporting English Language Learners: I have ELLs in my class and I'm not an ESL teacher: Now what?

Presenter(s): Varies

With the implementation of AB705 and increase of ELLs in cal states, more professors are seeing a rise in the number of English language learners, known as multilingual learners in increasingly rigorous courses. This can be intimidating and create concerns about success rates and how to support these learners. This four session series will create a path for professors to support these learners strategically using metacognitive conversation as a tool to know these students and increase the quality of course engagement.
