The Farthest Shore brings together six women artist from USA, Canada, and Ukraine, whose work touches on ideas of landscape, water, and the unknown. These artists have never been shown together and have been selected because of a shared thread running through their work. The exhibition will fill the gallery with large installations on paper so that the space of the work may immerse the space of the viewer. 74:A Surviving an Active Shooter Situation Training

The District Police Department’s defensive tactics/firearms instructors are presenting a workshop giving you practical techniques to use if you are confronted by an active shooter in a situation where you cannot run or hide, and your only alternative is to fight! This workshop is a learning continuation of the District Police Department's Surviving an Active Shooter Situation Training. As a reminder, this workshop will include physical activity including a brief warm up, application of control holds on a person, take down techniques on a person, and the use of personal weapons (hands, feet, knees, etc.). Please wear comfortable, athletic type attire. The physical portion of this training will be on mats where either mat shoes or socks must be worn. Please do not wear red shirts or red hats. Please NO jewelry, including watches and NO weapons; firearms, knives, impact, pepper spray, etc. If you have any preexisting medical conditions, please contact District Police before the workshop.

This class has a limit of 20 participants. 

This workshop is a learning continuation of the District Police Department's Surviving an Active Shooter Situation Training. As such, if you have never attended a presentation in the past, and have not seen the ‘Shots Fired on Campus - When Lightning Strikes’, video please indicate this as you preregister. You will need to provide your name and an email address, and you will be set up in an on-line course delivery system called OTIS. The 20 minute video is a good refresher of the tactics taught, so even if you have attended a presentation in the past it is highly recommend that you view it again.

Larque will talk about some of the untold stories of these valiant women and how their contributions to the revolution have been overlooked by historians because they were poor Indigenous or Mestiaz ethnic background.

Women's History Month event: Women are the fastest growing segment of the incarcerated population, increasing at nearly double the rate of men since 1985. The If Project is a documentary that engages inmates of the Washington Dept. of Corrections to share intimate accounts of their experiences through writing as a way to heal and change. It follows an extraordinary female police officer and four of the incarcerated women in the program. The premise of the program is “IF” there was something someone could have said or done that would have changed the path that led you here, what would it have been? Discussion to follow led by members of SRJC’s jail partnership faculty. Female students from the Rising Scholars student club will share their experiences.

What is it?

Appreciative observing is about faculty visiting each other’s classes to glean teaching techniques and learn from the wealth of experience we have at SRJC. It aims to disconnect classroom observation from evaluation. Instructors can get up to 6 hours of flex credit for any time spent observing a class, student appointment, online class, or discussing an observation with a colleague.  Meeting to discuss an observation is completely optional, but many people have found it interesting and worthwhile to debrief and discuss the class.

Once you have completed the observation, confirm your flex credit by selecting “Menu of Activities,” and “OND10: Appreciative Observations” for the amount of time you spent observing and/or discussing an observation.

A thought leader at the intersection of sustainability and racial justice, Silvestri is former Executive Director of People’s Grocery in Oakland, an organization fighting for equal access to healthy food in neighborhoods contending with disinvestment, poverty, and racial segregation. She also served as Executive Director of Green for All, the national organization co-founded by activist, best-selling author and TV commentator Van Jones that advocates for a “green collar economy” to combat poverty. Named one of the 100 Most Influential African Americans by The Root magazine, Silvestri is founder and CEO of Soil and Shadow, a project-development firm working to create systems change while improving relationships between communities. Peter Coyote's been an actor in over 145 films; an author of two books and numerous articles. In 1966 he was a founder of The Diggers, an anarchist family famous for free food, free stores, free medical clinics and free crash pads, From 1975-83 he served as policy advisor to Governor Edmund Brown Jr. and as a member (and later Chairman) of the California Arts Council and credited with many of the policies and political strategies which raised the budget from 1 to 18 million dollars annually. He currently lives on a small farm with two dogs and 40 fruit trees and is a fully transmitted Zen Buddhist priest.

 Jason Bayani is a graduate of Saint Mary’s MFA program in Creative Writing. He is a Kundiman fellow and a veteran of the National Poetry Slam scene whose work has been published in Fourteen Hills, Muzzle Magazine, Mascara Review, the National Poetry Slam anthology, Rattapallax, Write Bloody’s classroom anthology–– Learn Then Burn, and other publications. As a member of 7 National Poetry Slam teams, he’s been a National Poetry Slam finalist and represented Oakland at the International World Poetry Slam. He is also one of the founding members of the Filipino American Spoken Word troupe, Proletariat Bronze, and has been an organizer for the Asian and Pacific Islander Poetry and Spoken Word Summit. His first book, “Amulet” was published in 2013 through Write Bloody Press and has garnered acclaim in literary magazines such as Zyzzyva and Glint. He is currently the artistic director for Kearny Street Workshop (the oldest multi-disciplinary Asian Pacific American multi-disciplinary arts organization in the country).

In our post 9/11 world where stories of religiously motivated hate crimes set the rhythm for the news, many wonder if Christians and Muslims ever have or ever will peacefully coexist. In this talk, Art History Instructor Dr. Robin Haedong Kim turns to medieval architecture in northern Spain for an art historical perspective. Long believed to have been a Christian stronghold with absolutely no evidence of Muslim influences, the region of Navarre is home to architectural sites that challenge its standard histories. A small church in a remote town, the Santo Sepulcro in Torres del Río, stands as testament to a forgotten past when the cultural identifications of Christians and Muslims were mutable, multi-layered, and complicated.

Short film screening with Q&A following the film with Eddy Zheng & Ben Wang. The film is entitled, Breathin’ the Eddy Zheng Story, and it profiles Eddy who was arrested at 16, tried as an adult for kidnapping and robbery, and served over 20 years in California prisons and jails. The film paints an intimate portrait of Eddy—the prisoner, the immigrant, the son, the activist—on his journey to freedom, rehabilitation and redemption. A national advisory board member of the Asian American Law Journal, Eddy Zheng is the recipient of the Asian Law Students Outstanding Leadership Award and the Chinese World Journal Community Hero Award, the editor of Other: An Asian and Pacific Islander Prisoners’ Anthology, and now works for the San Francisco Community Youth Center. It is also a great honor to host both Eddy and Ben for Q&A following the film.

Lecture from 12 noon - 1:30 pm and Meditation from 2 - 3 pm. Venerable Jian Hu is the Abbot of Chung Tai Zen Center of Sunnyvale. He is a graduate from California Institute of Technology and earned his doctorate in Artificial Neural Networks from UC San Diego. He renounced the secular life and was ordained at Chung Tai Chan Monastery in Taiwan in 1994. In 2004, Jian Hu Shifu established the Zen Center of Sunnyvale in Silicon Valley. Under his leadership the Zen Center became well known locally, and demands for its programs increased rapidly. Besides offering Zen Buddhism classes and retreats, the Zen Center also hosts a variety of programs advocating vegetarianism, sustainable living, interfaith dialogue and Buddhist Psychology.

Fong Tran is Spoken Word Poet, Higher Education Professional and Youth Development trainer. He has a Masters degree from UC Davis in Community Development, focusing on the experiences of youth of color in social media. Fong engages students and professionals in several leadership workshops: Using Poetry as a Tool of Empowerment, Developing Ally Leadership, Healing Toxic Masculinity Among Men of Color, Social Media Literacy, and Defining Intersectional Social Justice. An enthusiastic orator, Fong’s work has been featured by TEDx, Upworthy, Kollaboration, Angry Asian Man, California Council of Cultural Centers in Higher Education (CACCCHE) and Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA).
